Eleanor Grace Bruning (nee Smiley), 84, of Washington, MO passed away on September 26, 2018.  She was born on October 24, 1933 in Laredo, MO to Cecil Wayne Smiley and wife Haddie (nee Franks). 


Eleanor grew up in Wright City, Missouri. She was confirmed at Immanuel E&R Church and attended Wright City High School. On September 4, 1953, she married her loving husband Lloyd Bruning. Together they had three children: Stephen, Charles, and Joan. Eleanor continued her education while her children were in school; she received an Associates Degree from St. Mary's College and a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from Saint Louis University. She was an Intensive Care Nurse at Firmin Deslodge Hospital and finished her years at the Hospital as a Charge Nurse in the Neurosurgery Intensive Care Unit. Eleanor then became a School Nurse at Pattonville Heights Middle School. While at Pattonville, she received the Employee of the Year Award in 1988 and the School Bell for service for the years 1979-1990. She was an advocate for both the physical and mental health of students, and served on the committee for the first sex education programs in the district. 


In retirement, Eleanor and Lloyd became RV-ers and traveled throughout the lower  United States, Canada, and Alaska. They spent time living at the Lake of the Ozarks and in Prescott, AZ, and returned home to Missouri in 2003. Eleanor loved God and all his creatures. She enjoyed time spent with family and friends, and being in nature. October was her favorite month! 


Eleanor was preceded in death by her parents Cecil and Haddie Smiley, and sisters Donna Chambers and Garrent Jerngan.


She is survived by her husband Lloyd Bruning; children and spouses, Stephen W. Bruning, Charles and Heather Bruning, and Joan and Gary Cooper; grandchildren and spouses, Katie and Alex Black, Frankie and Rob Synovec, Toft Bragg, Molly Cooper, and Thomas and Karen Bruning; sisters, Sally Foster, and Cecilia Griffith and husband Cody; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.  All of these she loved and touched deeply.    


A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2018 at 11:30am at Nieburg-Vitt Funeral Home, Washington, MO. Visitation will be held prior from 10-11:30am. Memorial donations can be made to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund or Franklin County Humane Society.
